Description

From fog-shrouded coastal hills and stately redwood groves to the windy summits of Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. St. Helena, and the pastoral East Bay Hills, the San Francisco Bay Area abounds with natural beauty, wildlife, and scenic vistas--and thousands of miles of well-maintained trails. Top Trails San Francisco Bay Area is your portable guide to the very best trails in the Bay Area. Longtime San Francisco residents and intrepid hikers David Weintraub and Ben Pease have selected 44 "must-do" trips for hiking, running, and bicycling. Trails range from easy strolls to all-day treks, from 2 to 12 miles, covering the most scenic parks and preserves between Santa Rosa and San Jose. The second edition features new hikes in Muir Woods and the Presidio, more elevation profiles, and fully-revised maps. At-a-glance information helps you find the best wildflowers, fall color, bird-watching, camping, historic sites, and cool hikes for hot days.

5San Francisco: Outdoor Destination  Nov 11, 2009 By Fritz R. Ward "dayhiker"
I think one could plausibly argue that San Francisco and the surrounding Bay area offers more immediately accessible outdoor recreation than any other metropolis in the country. Between the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, numerous state parks, Point Reyes National Seashore, and perhaps the best regional park system in the country, the Bay Area offers the best in hiking. Several years ago, David Weintraub wrote the first edition of Top Trails San Francisco and it quickly became one of the most sought after guides to the region. Now Ben Pease, a local cartographer, has updeated the original Weintraub book and the result is even better than the first edition.

Like all books in the Top Trails series, this guide is not meant to be a comprehensive listing of trails in the Bay Area. Instead, this book aims to describe the best routes and introduce hikers to as many ecosystems found within the Bay Area as possible. The book, like most Bay Area hiking guides, is divided into 4 chapters: Marin and North Bay, Peninsula, East Bay and South Bay. Each chapter begins with a short snapshot of hikes covered so one can quickly find a route that suits ability and interest. All 44 trail descriptions found in this book can be done in a single day though a few (Sky Trail in Point Reyes, Frog Lake in Henry Coe State Park) allow for overnight options. Each trail then receives an extensive write up followed by a two color map, elevation profile, and list of significant milestones.

Of the 44 hikes listed, I have taken five exactly as described in this book. However, I have also explored several portions of other routes. Based on what I have seen, the authors succeeded in identifying some truly choice trails in the Bay Area. The maps and mileage are accurate and the black and white photos complement the text nicely. I plan to take this book with me on my next vacation to the Bay Area. Highly recommended.

4A Must Have  Aug 16, 2004 By J. Fischer
This is an awesome book. It is very well organized-clearly the result of a lot of thought put into it by folks who have had the frustrating experience of struggling through poorly written or poorly organized guide books-and informative, while at the same time being concise and user friendly. It does a great job of including a wide variety of fabulous hikes, from short, leisurely walks to strenuous hikes for those up to a challenge, and a whole lot in between. An excellent addition to the Top Trials series. You won't be disappointed, and you will get good use out of this book no matter what your skill level or interest.

5Very Helpful and Easy to Use  Mar 17, 2008 By J. BATEMAN
This book continues to be a valuable resource for planning hikes for my scout troop. I used it to plan a hike at Wildcat Canyon, in the east bay.
It was easy to improvise from the pre-planned hike in the book because the maps were very good. I added a few miles to the hike presented in the book with no problem.

The starting points are well marked, and the textual description was very good. Trail references were superb. Driving directions to the trailhead were adequate but could have been a little clearer.

5Excellent hiking guide  Oct 18, 2010 By Eric
Wilderness Press Hiking guides are my absolute favorite. Descriptions of trails are always very detailed and easy to follow. Outstanding features in this book (and other guides I own from The Wilderness Press) include detailed maps with easy to locate trail key, trail grid (making it easy to compare trails) describing features such as dog allowance; biking accessibility; viewpoints; difficulty; length; altitude change; wildlife patterns; terrain type; waterfall and stream features; altitude track, landmarks for on-the-trail quick references, alternate route options, and seasonal descriptions about various parts of each hike. Bottom line: this is a great tool for both novice and beginner hikers or anyone else wanting to get out and explore the SF bay area's beautiful natural landscape and wildlife. Enjoy!

1Top Trails San Francisco Bay Area: Must-do Hikes for Everyone  Aug 25, 2011 By Laurie
The descriptions for the trails are very vague and hard to follow. We tried two times to find a trail and both times seemed to take a wrong route, its just not clearly marked.
